Here's how to navigate through the AMCAS - AAMC application site to upload a recommendation letter.


Note that AMCAS recently updated their letter writer submission process. If you are applying to medical schools for admission in 2026 or beyond follow these directions. (Instructions for those applying for admission in 2025 can be found at the bottom of this post.)

 


1. Make sure to sign up and create an application on the AMCAS website.




2. In the AMCAS system, on the Letters of Evaluation/Recommendation page, click ADD LETTER REQUEST.






3. A window will pop-up, select Committee Letter, Letter Packet, or Individual Letter (as appropriate) and enter a title for your letter.





4. Enter the letter writer's information and, for the email address, paste the unique address that PrivateFolio has assigned to that letter. You MUST enter this unique address as the contact email in order for the letter to be successfully submitted. 



*Note: the unique email address can be found on your Privatefolio account next to the corresponding letter under the Rec Letter >> Letters on File page.




5. Click SAVE LETTER REQUEST, once all the information is entered, which will bring a pop-up screen asking if you are ready to email this letter request. Click the required acknowledgment box and press SEND.





6. The AMCAS-AAMC system will send an email to PrivateFolio with your letter request details and you will receive an email notification asking you to pay/approve the upload. This may take 2-3 minutes.



7. Log-in to your PrivateFolio account and click on Payment Required which will be visible in the upper left-hand corner of the page.




8. Click the checkmark to approve payment ($2) using the funds in your account balance. If you don't have funds available, click the credit card icon to pay by credit card.





You're all set! PrivateFolio will upload the letter on your behalf and you will receive a confirmation email when the upload is completed. Most uploads are processed the same day they are approved.

FOR STUDENTS APPLYING FOR FALL 2025 ADMISSIONS


Follow the same steps as above. However, after you enter your letter writer information, AMCAS will provide you a form two important pieces of information, your AAMC ID and the Letter ID. Take note of both.



Sign-in to your PrivateFolio account. Click on the Delivery tab and then click the button labeled AMCAS-AAMC LETTER.

Enter your AAMC ID and the Letter ID on the fields provided and select the associated letter from the drop down list.





Click the Initiate Letter Request. You will see a confirmation notification indicating that the request has been submitted. Note there is still one step left. Continue to pay/approve your delivery as indicated above.
